In an ideal market, the balance of sellers will break down to one third who are desperate to divest for various reasons (everything from financial stress to having already signed an offer on a new property), one third who are upgrading, and one third who are downsizing (again, for numerous reasons, such as wanting less home maintenance or the children are leaving home). Right now, it’s a very different picture because the economy has been stagnant for so long. The desperate sellers make up about two thirds of the market, downsizers a further quarter and only a tiny remaining portion – less than 10% – represent the upwardly mobile. There is no Liberty Bell that resounds across the hills and valleys telling you now is the time to invest in property, but if you haven’t by the time the cycle swings back to a sellers’ market, somewhere between 2020 and 2022, chances are you’re going to kick yourself quite hard. Allowing political tomfoolery to immobilise you with fear does as much good as tensing up on the golf course, and the outcome of both will be much the same – standing in a corner counting your losses at the end of the day. Every offer to purchase stands a good chance of being converted into a sale right now, so there also won’t be a better time for first-time buyers and young families to jump into the market. The cherries are there for the picking – just start looking.

I am an avId golfer; it’s something I do to unwind, I use it as a platform to exercise outdoors, away from the gym, and as an escape from the chain attached to my office chair. The brief respite from the constant bombardment of phone and email communication is refreshing. Golf teaches many lessons. Apart from the obvious one of not letting frustration get the better of you, of late, the golf course has been where I’ve been able to step back and most objectively view the property market. On the face of it, very little has happened to make anyone feel like popping champagne corks – it’s been far more of an annus horribilis than an annus mirabilis – but the situation gets slightly less depressing if one applies golfing logic. Go with me for a minute… In golf, every shot pleases somebody; it may not necessarily be you on this shot, but chances are you’ll be smiling somewhere on the next hole and your opponent will be far less chipper than he was 10 minutes previously. The same applies in the housing market, which, like the economy, moves in cycles. It was a sellers’ market prior to the 2008 global market crash, a buyer’s market directly afterwards that slowly shifted towards sellers around 2012/13, and now it’s the buyers’ turn again. We’ve taken a few hard knocks this year and local and international investor confidence is extremely low following the Cabinet reshuffle and other political shenanigans, but a cyclical property market is normal. And just like you might gleefully line up your green shot after your opponent lands in the rough, if you have the capital tucked away or access to manageable credit on good terms, there isn’t a better time than now to create a second income stream by amassing a small property portfolio that will also stand you in good stead as a retirement fund.

Glamour. Even the word itself has an elegant appeal. Working in a creative, fashion-conscious industry, glamour is an integral part of my life. It’s an often intangible concept, sometimes constructed with smoke and mirrors, and one which drives a number of industries – from jewellery, magazines, art and fashion to transportation, film and music. What’s most interesting about glamour is that it’s a relatively new concept. Until its popular reinterpretation, driven by the rise of the Hollywood film industry during the 1920s and 1930s, the word itself meant a magic spell, as cast by witches or gypsies. Hollywood changed that – the bewitchment now cast by the magic created through its glamour machine. Think high-contrast black and white portraits, silky gowns, furs, dramatic lighting, cigarettes and sparkling jewellery – the perfect antidote to the Great Depression. Glamour was redefined by the likes of Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, rita Hayworth, and the ever-feuding Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. The latter two are the subject of a much talked-about american TV series, Feud, starring Jessica lange as Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Davis. (By the way, Sarandon is known to be a fan of Elegance’s in-house brand, Nom Nom. Turns out she was sitting next to Elegance client Cape Town glamour mommy Heidi Wilder on a flight and admired Heidi’s Nom Nom necklace. Sarandon then popped into Elegance to buy her own.) Quite often, the magic of glamour is also elusive, almost an ether – the frisson created by the contrast between accessibility and distance. So, while Hollywood stars became a part of one’s life, through magazines at the nearest news agent or brought to life at cinemas like The Colosseum Theatre in Commissioner Street, they also remained somewhat distant, on a page or on a screen. Fast forward 75 years to a world that’s decidedly unglamorous. Too much accessibility for far too many: reality TV, social media, fake crocodile-skin bags, oversized plastic sunglasses, trainers and sweats worn in public – no mystique, no magic, no desirability. Balance, and a sense of mystery, are key. So, when I think of Johannesburg glamour, I think Somizi, Pearl Thusi, mother-to-be Tamara Dey and, with great fondness, the flame-haired and much-missed style siren, Jenny Andrew. all share a certain je ne sais quoi that sets them apart from others. Each is a celebration of sophisticated individuality. Many of our clients at Elegance are no different. Five can choose the same item, and each one will wear it differently. MUSEUM In thE SEa the much-anticipated Louvre abu Dhabi has finally opened its doors – and what an architectural feat it is! Inspired by the traditional architecture of the United arab Emirates, French architect Jean nouvel has created a striking new addition to the abu Dhabi cityscape. Located on Saadiyat Island close to the city centre, the museum is the first of its kind in the arab world. the space houses over 600 acquisitions, ranging from prehistoric artefacts to contemporary artworks, with about 300 loans from various French museums, including the Musée du Louvre in Paris. the museum’s most remarkable feature is the large central dome that appears to float above the rest of the buildings. the design was inspired by the cupola, a distinctive feature of arabian architecture, and comprises around 8 000 metal stars, which are repeated at different angles and layers to create a 'rain of light' effect inside the building, much like dappling through palm trees. Geometry and light are central to the design. the museum’s permanent pieces include the funeral set of Princess henuttawy, a remnant of ancient Egypt dating back to the 10th century BC, while the loan collection will boast Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘La Belle Ferronnière’ and a self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh.

Similar, not the Same Biosimilars could save the healthcare system millions, and they may save your life one day. Words kathy MalhErBE

The RISe OF non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is creating a burden on healthcare systems, not only in South Africa but also internationally. NCDs, which include cancers and certain chronic conditions, account for approximately 38 million deaths annually worldwide, with up to 80% occurring in developing countries. however, the recent patent expiry on many biological medicines used in their treatment is opening the door to more affordable, lifesaving ‘biosimilars’. So what is a biosimilar? In order to understand why they are considered the ‘new champions’ in the pharmaceutical industry, one needs to explain what they are. A biosimilar is the close equivalent of a biotechnological (biological or biologic) medicine that is manufactured after the patent for the biological drug ends. Biological drugs consist of large, complicated molecules

that are manufactured from living organisms. The term is used to describe a wide range of products, including the latest cancer therapies, vaccines and blood treatments. Because biosimilars are close copies of biological medicines, the molecules making up the drug are many times larger and more complex than conventional, small-molecule generic medicines. The reason biological copies are called biosimilars is that, unlike generic medicines, the active ingredients are not exactly the same as the original but ‘similar.’ The processes associated with translating biological molecules from living cells in the laboratory to mass-produced molecules make it impossible to create identical copies. Very importantly, even though biosimilars are not a direct copy, the therapeutic effect is the same as the original biological product. Biological products have been on the market for more than 30 years and vaccines have an even longer track record. There are about 300 biological medicines that have already been used to treat 350 million people globally. One in three medicines currently in development is a biological medicine. It is unlikely that a patient could obtain a modern biological or biosimilar medicine from a retail pharmacy as they are usually administered in a hospital or oncology setting under the supervision of suitably qualified healthcare professionals. They are most commonly used to treat diabetes (by substituting the body’s own insulin production), complex skin and joint diseases, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, cancers, including melanomas and leukaemia, and rheumatic conditions.

So why are biosimilars in the news? ‘The recent patent expiry on many biological meds will pave the way for more affordable, lifesaving biosimilars,’ says Vivian Frittelli, CEO of Generic and Biosimilar Medicines of Southern Africa (GBM). ‘In South Africa, generic medicines have allowed our country to have the most robust and accessible hIV programme in the world.’ The cost of manufacturing biological medicines is more expensive than conventional chemically produced medicines. ‘Biological entities are very expensive,’ says Madelein Bester, an executive of Mediscor pharmacy benefit managers, ‘The average cost per patient is around R70 000 per year, sparking a definite demand for biosimilars to curb the exorbitant costs associated with treating illnesses like cancer.’ While these medicines have revolutionised treatments for many diseases, the research and development expenses, including the costs of highly skilled scientists, clinical trials and the specialised equipment needed, are the main cost drivers. Companies are required to fund these costs, often in excess of 10 years, before registration for use by patients. The reduction of costs for biosimilars can be ascribed to a few factors:  Fewer patients are required for the clinical trials.  The original biological medicine would have been manufactured at least 20 years ago. New manufacturing methods are more efficient.  The molecule and its effects have already been discovered and identified by the originator.

(This origination process is what makes them unaffordable to many developing markets and contributes to unsustainable healthcare costs in developed markets.) ‘The cost-efficiencies, which generic and biosimilar medicines provide, are going to assume greater importance for state and private healthcare funders as populations age and the prevalence of cancers and other NCDs increases. however, the recent expiry of the patent protection on many biological medicines has paved the way for more affordable “copies” or “follow-on medicines” to be produced,’ says Bester. Because the efficacy of the medicine has already been established by the originator, a less onerous clinical examination process and cost-effective development enable these medicines to be introduced to the market at as much as 50% less than their originator counterparts, thereby providing greater access to these lifesaving treatments. The Medicines Control Council (MCC) will speed up the registration process because the original medicine can be used as a blueprint for evaluating the biosimilar. And many of the questions about efficacy and safety would have been resolved in the original evaluation. South Africa’s already stretched healthcare budget is coming under increasing pressure to fund the high cost of pharmaceuticals, especially biological medicines. While biosimilars may not be a panacea, they will go a long way towards offering a cost-effective treatment for a large range of diseases, and these breakthrough treatments can halt progression and sometimes even prevent recurrence by acting on proteins that affect the genome or the immune system.

Words CATHERINE DAVIS Whether you know it as the country that joined the eU as a de facto divided island or ‘Aphrodite’s Isle’, as touted in the tourist brochures, Cyprus both confirms and confounds stereotypes. The small mountainous island country situated in the eastern Mediterranean is a blend of Western European cultural influences and more than a hint of the East, thanks to its geographic proximity to both Asia and Africa. ‘The Cypriot property market has seen a boom over the last two years, especially from foreign buyers,’ says Yael Geffen, chief executive officer of Sotheby’s International Realty South Africa. In the second quarter of 2017, house and apartment prices were up 3.1% from the first quarter of the year, according to the Cyprus Statistical Service (CYSTAT). In October 2017, the Cyprus house Price Index also reported that residential property prices had risen by 3.6% on an annual basis, and that there had been a 50% worldwide increase in online searches for Cypriot real estate. ‘The unprecedented interest has been largely encouraged by the introduction of residence and citizenship programmes, a bid by the government of Cyprus to attract wealthy and talented individuals to the island’s pristine shores.’ Not that much encouragement is needed to visit Cyprus, where 300 days of sunshine a year is the norm, English is widely spoken and both the crime rate and cost of living are comfortingly low. In addition, the country has a modern, free-market, service-based economy with an effective and transparent regulatory and legal framework, giving international investors and businesses the confidence to invest, grow and prosper. In a story of remarkable resilience, Cyprus turned around its economy from near bankruptcy to continued sustained growth in a few years – it ranked 65th out of 144 countries on the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016 and steady economic growth is predicted for at least the next three years. A recent overhaul of the country’s banking sector is further stimulating this growth.

The lively, richly romantic holiday-resort region of Paphos on Cyprus’s west coast, which runs from Polis on the island’s northwestern tip down to Limassol in the south, receives the lion’s share of visitors. And once you’ve seen the Blue Flag beaches flanked by limestone cliffs and accessorised with tilting palm trees, you’ll understand why. The old part of Paphos showcases yesteryear Greece with its temples and forts, while Limassol has an atmospheric old town. The Paphos region showcases a relaxed Mediterranean existence. Peaceful village squares dominate tiny villages like Pomos and Latchi, and the countryside is characterised by pine-covered hills and olive groves. ‘Everyone speaks English in Paphos,’ says Geffen. ‘There are a number of high-quality private schools and the city is very cosmopolitan. There are many South African expats living there – the terrain is quite similar. Investing in Paphos is a savvy insurance policy for your family as it’s your guaranteed gateway to Europe. With political and economic uncertainty weighing in heavily, South Africans are looking for a safe haven should they decide to leave. Aside from investing in a wonderful holiday home in idyllic Paphos, it serves that purpose.’ Tasia Savas of Medousa Developers in Cyprus, is an ex-South African and has been in the property business for the last 15 years, and chose to work with Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty to market their Paphos developments because of the premium clients they offer. ‘From apartments to freestanding homes, be it fronting the ocean or beside the fairway, the real estate options available in Paphos cater to all category of buyer, including new residents, second-home owners and holidaymakers,’ says Savas. ‘The region’s holiday-destination status also makes purchasing property here for tourism rental a worthwhile investment.’ According to the rICS Cyprus Property Price Index, the average price of an apartment in Paphos now stands at €97 341, with a monthly rent of €293 (or €3.47 per m2) – that’s an average annual rental yield of 3.6%.

Launched in 2009, the Cypriot Permanent Residence Program was specifically designed to boost the local property market, its main requirement being the purchase of residential or commercial property (or both) for a minimum amount of €300 000. A fast-track application procedure and a high approval rate if all criteria are satisfied are among the key advantages of the programme, as is the fact that dependants can be enrolled at top-quality private schools that use both Europe’s and the US’s schooling systems. Recently lowered capital requirements (which are 100% investment-based) and the fast-track approval make Cyprus’s Citizenship-by-Investment Program one of the most attractive in the EU. The programme, which was launched just four years ago, requires a minimum capital requirement of €2 million, which can be spread across real estate, land development or infrastructure projects, and grants successful applicants lifetime citizenship to an EU member state. This capital requirement can be reduced after three years to €500 000. Citizenship is transferrable by descent to future generations and a Cypriot passport confers visa-free access to no fewer than 157 countries, including Canada, Hong Kong and the UK. It also allows the passport holder to live and work in the EU. So, while mainland Greece and Turkey have long coveted this small island set adrift the European Mediterranean, investors too are quickly cottoning on to its countless attractions.

Mind Games of the Mongol Derby

While physical preparation is vitally important, preparing the mind for battle at the Mongol Derby is how winners are made. Words DavID MoSElEy

In 1224 GenGhIs Khan established the world’s first longdistance postal system. By creating a extensive network of horse stations – known as morin urtuus in Mongolian – his robust messengers were able to gallop from Kharkhorin to the Caspian sea in a matter of days. For 10 days each august, the Mongol Derby recreates this legendary system across the Mongolian steppes with a network of urtuus placed at 40km intervals along the entire 1 000 kilometre course. The Mongol Derby is the longest and toughest endurance horse race in the world. Barry armitage’s ride at this year’s race ended as a hunt. however, unlike previous years when he had been chased down in the closing kilometres, this time it was armitage doing the chasing. ‘In 2012, another rider and I lead the race for six days,’ recalls armitage. ‘In a race like this, everyone wobbles at some stage; my wobble came on the second-last day. I felt hunted, constantly looking over my shoulder. Ultimately, I was just too worried that the chasers were going to catch me and I cracked. They caught me and that was the end of it.’ Forty-one riders participated in this year’s Mongol Derby. But the men and women capable of winning number around 10. From the minute the race starts, a small group will break away, separating the riders from the racers. Tackling the race on semi-wild Mongolian horses adds extra elements of tension and drama. Choose the wrong

horse at the start or at the vet check – riders change horses every 40km – and your race is as good as done. armitage’s advantage was his mental strength and his intimate knowledge of horse-handling. ‘I have always loved horse riding,’ he says. ‘For as long as I can remember, I’ve been riding horses.’ after a career as a professional sailor based in spain, armitage returned to south Africa. He bought his first horse in 2004, but it was only when he was presented with a former endurance horse named Pepsi that he realised the potential of long-distance horse riding. ‘In the foothills of the Drakensberg, on a 3 000-hectare plot, she showed me what was possible on the back of a horse.’ success at Derby comes back to the head, though. The horse is integral to the mission, but the mission is only as good as the rider’s mental state. ‘Preparing your head is essential. If your head goes, you’re buggered. Thankfully, I like riding alone, so that doesn’t wear me down.’

Armitage has the experience and the know-how; that’s how he came to ride in his first Mongol Derby in 2011. While doing research for his television show The Ride, which retraces the hoofprints of epic horse rides from history, armitage took note of the Mongol Derby, the recreation of Genghis Khan’s ancient horse messenger system. Armitage’s first Derby then became the second season of his show. after a bleak end to his debut, he returned in 2012, crossing the line first but receiving a twohour time penalty for overworking his horse. This time he was wiser and wilier. ‘at 1 000km, the most important aspect of it is to break it down into chunks; if you look at the 1 000km as a total you will go mad. I break it down into sections. When you choose a horse, you simply focus on getting on that horse and staying on that horse. The first 5km goes by, then another 5km and you deal with the horse like that; you know you have to get it to the end safely, so you work within those parameters.’ Reading the horse is equally important. ‘When you have some experience you know that a horse will bolt at the beginning of a ride. The experienced rider will hold that energy, rein it in, gauge how much energy is there and use it appropriately.’ after the earlier disappointments at the Mongol Derby, that’s exactly what armitage did. With a strong body and a stronger mind, he slowly crept up on the race leader; an insidious creep as armitage calls it. ‘The aim was always to go and win; not just to ride. so I was better prepared, more mindful of my surroundings, doing everything to gain an advantage by putting my experience to good use. and, when you are not leading, you have nothing to lose. You can roll the dice. and that’s what I did.’ all the traditional elements of stage racing come into play at the Mongol Derby: illness, fatigue, equipment failure (in this case, an overworked horse). and, in the end, the person with the mental staying power reaps the reward. ‘There’s an imaginary elastic band when chasing someone. If you can just see that person; there is always the chance you might catch them.’ armitage rode to the line alongside australian rider ed Fernon, this after race leader – and fellow south african – Jakkie Mellet failed the penultimate vet check. In blistering heat, the two came to an agreement that it was best not to race to the finish, preserving the health of their horses and taking a shared victory home. ‘It’s mind games, a lot of mind games,’ says armitage. ‘But also having the mental capacity after 1 000km of tough riding to make big decisions. That’s how you handle something that’s this extreme.’

of urban culture. Originating at the Bata Shoe Museum (a footwear museum in Toronto, Canada), the exhibition examined the sneaker’s complex social history and immense cultural significance. And it wasn’t just all running shoes; sneakers by Prada and other major fashion design houses as well as collaborations with artists like Damien Hirst were there to be seen. These days you can wear yours with anything – sports luxe is the look. Fling on a camel cashmere coat and a pair of Alexander McQueen’s oversized sneakers made from calf’s leather and trust us, it’s a polished style. For men, Dolce & Gabbana’s handsome black canvas sneakers with Patches of the Designers are extremely versatile in a classic wardrobe. Ditto Gucci’s Ace Sneaker collection. ThE COllECTOR’S COuTuRE In the ’90s and noughties, women were Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik-mad. They still are, but fortunately they’ve ditched the tired notion that these labels are the only ones that count. Fresh names are becoming collector’s dreams; their designs works of exquisite art. One such label belongs to British shoe and accessories designer Sophia Webster; her almost ethereal creations with their delicate laser-cut angel and butterfly wings have become a recognisable trademark. If too much detail isn’t your aesthetic, turn to another Brit to dress your feet. Paul Andrew’s sleek, graphic-like designs feature strong outlines as seen in his Bagutta sandals (in lipstick-red suede) and two-toned Brera slingbacks. For winter, invest in his pointed-toe Matteotti boot, triple-dyed in black suede. You won’t be disappointed.

There’s a perception, perhaps among the more mature set, that a man’s footwear wardrobe is confined to dress shoes, loafers, sneakers (now de rigueur) and a pair of perfectly polished black cap-toes ideal to wear with a tux. A few years ago a Time magazine poll revealed that the average man owns 12 pairs of shoes. But what if you need to branch out? Pride of Place The new Louis Vuitton flagship store returns home to the Place Vendôme in Paris.

Many of those who tote a Louis think the maison is a handbag company firmly rooted in fashion. But the luxury brand’s origin story goes much further back and is much more interesting. It’s one of fine craft and entrepreneurship, heritage and family. Maybe a foreshadowing of its future as a global brand, Louis Vuitton embarked in 1854 on a path designing travel trunks. Over time, of course, this offering evolved into the multifaceted and iconic empire it is today, but all the while carrying through the thread of commitment to craftsmanship, whether diversifying into clothing, watchmaking or fragrance lines. Honouring heritage and staying relevant are two things Louis Vuitton does well – and never more visibly so than in its new flagship store. A nod to its roots as well as an opportunity to display its ability to stay on the pulse, the Maison Louis Vuitton Vendôme takes up residence in a location steeped in heritage but one that’s also fresh and exciting. The site is two hôtels particuliers (Parisian townhouses) with façades that run along both the Place Vendôme and the rue du Faubourg St Honoré. What’s special about this particular address is that it was on the Place Vendôme where Louis Vuitton opened his first store 160 years ago. Designed and built in 1714 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart whose legacy includes the Château of Versailles, the space has been subjected to many alterations over the years, not all of them good. And so, as part of his Louis Vuitton mandate, architect Peter Marino has restored them as close to their original state as possible – even going as far as raising ceilings to their original grandeur. A friend of maison Louis Vuitton for over two decades, Marino has designed a number of the brand’s stores globally and was a fitting choice for their flagship, his edgy approach and rockstar profile making him the ideal candidate to create a retail experience for the 21st century. While the exterior of the building and the architectural bones themselves have been respected and restored (with the addition of a showstopping decorative sunburst installation across the façade dreamt up by visual creative director Faye Mcleod), Marino has introduced contemporary elements like glass balustrading suspended by steel cables on a stone staircase in a physical expression of the marriage of old and new. It’s in these details that the design serves to create a superlative shopping experience – something that, despite the explosion of online shopping, hasn’t

lost its appeal in the luxury space. With objects of great beauty and a high price tag, you’re buying the intangible as well as the physical. And Marino has created a visual, sensory and emotional journey through the maison’s different métiers that tell the brand’s story. It’s a literal journey too, of the floors and sections – leather goods and accessories, leading on to menswear and then ladieswear and, finally and fittingly, a travel section with luggage, Louis Vuitton City Guides, Objets Nomades (a range of travel and home pieces), and two special archival trunks. In addition, to drive home the tradition of craft, there are two working ateliers: Atelier Rare & Exceptionnel for elite clients looking for red-carpet garb, and an haute joaillerie space. But as devotees and insiders will know, Louis Vuitton’s commitment to the arts goes well beyond fashion and travel, and this facet of the brand will be expressed via a collection of contemporary artworks to complete the visual experience. The 33 pieces by artists from six continents, including Laurent Grasso, Yan Pei-Ming, Stephen Sprouse, Serge Alain Nitegeka and Paul Nabulumo Namarinjmak, will live alongside the retail offerings and layer the experience still further, a fitting complement to a space dedicated to the beauty of creation and the idea of building a legacy.

ThE ScEnT of now Hit all the right notes with fine fragrances that can extend your scent wardrobe in a thoroughly modern way. If you have only one beloved fragrance, scent marketers might feel they haven’t done their jobs. For the reluctant-at-heart, consider exploring new fragrance launches; they are the perfect olfactory manifestations, not only of the houses they represent, but also of perfume as an art form. So, what to hunt and gather this season? Modern women’s scents are dosed with a surge of florals, made contemporary with ingredients such as Ambroxan (an ambery note that is known to amplify the florals in the heart of a fragrance). Find it in the exquisitely presented Kenzo World. For men, our pick is Issey Miyake’s L’Eau Majeure d’Issey. Message in a Bottle ‘A perfume is a work of art, and the object that contains it must be a masterpiece,’ said Robert Ricci, son of Maria ‘Nina’ Ricci with whom he started the iconic label that bore her name. No truer words have been spoken, certainly not as far as fragrances and the flacons that house them are concerned. Ancient vessels had humble beginnings: early Egyptians used containers made from wood and clay, and for their scented concoctions, the Palestinians preferred beautifully coloured glass bottles. The ancient Greeks made handpainted vases often crafted into the shape of animals, and the Romans hollowed out precious stones to hold their equally precious scented contents. Fast forward to the 21st century, and we’re living in a fine-looking era in terms of flacon design, but it’s also an innovative one. Take Chanel’s creative approach to the lightweight yet clean-lined Gabrielle Chanel EDP flacon. It’s almost a whisper of a bottle (the house’s intent), as they wanted the fragrance itself to be the hero by allowing the simple flacon to radiate the liquid’s hue through exceptionally fine glasswork. The stopper is neither silver

nor gold, rather matte lamé, once again to avoid a big-bottle statement. Chanel cleverly turned around the concept that a luxury fragrance must be housed in a heavy, opulent bottle, and instead used delicacy to turn attention to what’s inside. Another design worthy of attention is La Perla La Mia Perla EDP as it plays with geometry and 3-D effects. Celebrated perfume-bottle designer Pierre Dinand was enlisted to create a bottle with a sensuously curving shape that would showcase ‘my pearl’ in an arresting way. South African designers have something to crow about too. Renowned fashion designer Mark Eisen (who hails from SA) teamed up with Dunhill, and his vision for the design conceptualisation of their male fragrance Icon (he designed the full range) was awarded a Fifi D’Or in 2016 in Paris for exceptional design and packaging. Sponsored by The Fragrance Foundation in France, and renowned throughout the fragrance industry as the most prestigious awards, this ‘Oscar’ only goes to one men’s and one women’s fragrance each year. Eisen also received a FiFi award in the same year for Best New Design and Packaging in London. His work on fragrance-bottle design also saw him create the stylised diamond-inspired flacon, with its soft curves and rounded form, for Montblanc Lady Emblem EDP. There is also much to behold in the beauty of flacons past. While the fragrance vessels of yesteryear have been updated, the heritage of their beauty is still wonderfully captured. None more so than Shalimar. The fragrance, created by Guerlain in 1925 (the first oriental fragrance in history), has been the source of much applause since its launch nearly a century ago. Rock Star The enigmatic emerald is having a moment in the spotlight. WORDs Julia FREEmantlE

DiamonDs always seem to take the limelight, the assumed star of the show where gems are concerned. But when it comes to actual value, emeralds can outprice them per carat. surprising, until you realise that it’s their rarity that makes them so precious. as one of the big three ‘precious gems’ (alongside rubies and sapphires), they’re considered timeless, impervious to changes in fashion (despite being particularly in demand at the moment). as a result they hold their value, and have done so since their first recorded history. Believed to hold properties of healing, immortality, eloquence and even protection against evil in some cultures, the Jewel of Kings has a longstanding love affair with royalty. The first known mines were in Egypt dating back to 330BC, and Cleopatra herself was believed to have a passion for the green genie. Later on, in the 16th century, invaders of the new World from spain discovered the riches of Colombia, where the incas had been adorning themselves with emeralds for centuries. They in turn traded the stones for precious metal, having more use for the latter, ensuring the spread of emeralds across the globe and into the hands of European and asian royalty. most royal collections over time – from the Greek and Danish to swedish and French dynasties – have included a showstopper emerald piece. many were lost (or almost lost, like the Cambridge Emeralds when Queen mary’s brother almost bequeathed them to his mistress), sold or reset, but a few remain in their original glory. some in palace vaults, like Queen mary’s art Deco Emerald Choker, which was given to Princess Diana as a wedding gift; and some available to view, like the emerald tiara, made in 1820 for the

Last year a computer programme called alphaGo beat a 9-dan professional Go player for the first time. This was a watershed moment in the narrowing of the gap between artificial and human intelligence. Go, the ancient Chinese board game, is the benchmark, rather than chess, because it requires more intuition, sophisticated evaluation and experience to win. Score one for the machines. However, in September 2017, in another world first, a robot called yuMi conducted the Lucca Philharmonic orchestra in Pisa to a lukewarm reception. The robot consists of two disembodied arms and, according to a BBC report, the audience felt it lacked enthusiasm. Musicians said it killed improvisation. So, humans – 1, machines – 1. While it seems the machines can’t cut it in the orchestral world, yet, a Us-based start-up, arthena, is betting on the

machines being better judges of fine art than us humans. It uses machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, to drive the selection of art works to build art funds. In much the same ways as other industries have been disrupted by innovation recently – taxis, hotels, real estate, publishing – arthena wants to raise the veil on opaque pricing mechanisms and use digital efficiencies to lower the transaction costs. the intention is to make it possible to compare an investment in an art fund with other investment options, plus make the market more democratic. ‘We want to expand the asset class and make it more accessible for a wider audience to participate in,’ said Madelaine D’angelo, arthena’s co-founder and CEO. ‘The artwork market is extremely mysterious and hard to judge as a novice. You usually trust the opinion of experts, and

Overcoming these biases endemic to the traditional art world is where machine learning and quantitative investing principles come into their own, according to D’Angelo.

NOT fOR EVERYONE If you are starting to squirm at how cold and calculating this all feels, you wouldn’t be alone. While Cape Town-based entrepreneur and contemporary collector Joshin raghubar agrees that the art market could be more transparent, he highlights the difference between investors and collectors. ‘A collector invests in their passions and interests, and works they connect with emotionally and aesthetically; only secondarily do they try to make a good monetary investment decision. For most collectors, it starts with the ephemeral and an attempt to ground that in the rational.’ so, although he sees merit in the arthena approach, raghubar would prefer a fund that allows him contact with the art. ‘For me, as a new collector, this will have more appeal than a fund that disconnects you from the work bought and sold, regardless of the strategy used to make these decisions.’ D’Angelo doesn’t disagree. ‘If you really are completely in love with the work and you have to own it, then you should buy it. But don’t expect that work to be a financial investment or give a return. the argument that investors or collectors looking for a fully-diversified or balanced art portfolio shouldn’t try achieve this themselves is compelling, but you need to be OK with the fact that the art is in storage for the duration of the fund. It’s early days yet, and with an investment horizon of at least five years, it’s too soon to say whether the machines will deliver the promised year-on-year returns of around 15% and win this one, but D’Angelo is bullish. ‘We have the most accurate pricing methodology in the marketplace; we can outprice anybody else in the market,’ she says.

Laurent BaLLesta is a marine scientist, an underwater photographer and a pioneer in the use of new diving equipment. Pursuing his childhood dream of meeting the coelacanth (or ‘Gombessa’ as the people of Comoros call it - it was thought to have become extinct 65 million years ago) in its natural environment has driven Laurent Ballesta very far. Instead of setting up hypotheses in laboratories based on recovered dead specimens or peering at footage from submergible cameras, he descended to unprecedented depths to observe the creature sometimes described as a ‘living fossil’. But exploratory trips like these don’t come cheaply, and Ballesta has had the support of watchmaker

‘the Furious Fifties are behind us and the Astrolabe is approaching the antarctic continent by sailing through the calm, open waters of the polynya. We are not alone, as ice giants stud the smooth expanse to unbelievable heights. In fact, the scene has to be seen to be believed, because how can one possibly conceive that mountains can float? ‘a few kilometres from the French Dumont d’urville base, they mark the entrance to Adélie Land… We glide silently past them, feeling like tiny specks on our 65-metre long boat, while bearing in mind that we can only see 10 percent of their volume. under the surface, these gigantic ice masses are invisible. although there are plenty of ‘fakes’ on the web, along with computer-generated images and far-fetched tales, no one has ever been able to view a whole iceberg at once, much less take a picture of it. Poor visibility, darkness, freezing water, inaccessible depths – countless obstacles have managed to keep secret this submerged side, the hidden face of the planet of ice. ‘at this point, after 11 days of a difficult crossing, I have a sudden fantasy: could one possibly reveal the entire iceberg? the idea gains momentum. We have been diving for three weeks and each evening when we return we are one step closer to exhaustion. today’s dive revealed a spherical iceberg, with a circumference of around 200m, floating above the seabed. It is perfectly still because it is imprisoned by the ice floe, so there is no risk of it drifting or turning sharply. Polished by the current, it looks like a giant pebble. I present my strategy to my mates who, despite being somewhat perplexed, are all for the new idea. this is no simple task, but it’s worth a try. ‘the following day, we dive in alongside the ice slope. Once on the seabed, we implement the plan: with the halyards weighted to the sea floor and all our surface marker buoys on reels, we establish a huge grid with thread over the entire depth of the water in order to take around a hundred photographs at equal distances from the iceberg. several hours and a few frozen toes later, we are sitting in front of the computer, which is churning through and digesting the set of photographs. under the water, none of us were able to see the entire iceberg. To change something, they build a new model that can make the existing paradigm obsolete. To wit, their 2019 a8 is the cleverest audi of all, and it claims to have the potential of reclaiming more command of our travel-time. To put these claims into context, audi cEo rupert Stadler reckons the future of premium means taking back control of our time: ‘because time is one of the most

valuable goods – downtime, when you need a break, and productive time, when you want to get things done.’ With the aI autonomous function in place, the a8 offers full independent control so the driver can engage in other tasks, and hands back control if it doesn’t recognise a road traffic situation. It literally has the potential to drive itself on clogged freeways at up to 60km/h. but not yet. The pared-down, bauhaus simplicity of this third generation a8 is elegant and imposing. Inside, I’m faced with upper and lower centre screens with haptic and audible feedback, and a virtual cockpit driver’s binnacle, which creates a button-

less but easy-to-use facia. Every function needed on the move is accessible, allowing focus on the road for longer. It's a tour-de-force, with the best air suspension system of any car I have driven lately, with all body movement properly damped and worthy of cars twice the price. The V6 diesel is the pinnacle of smooth power and economy – 5.6 litres/100km and 145g/km in emissions. It’s a technology flagship that few brands have the resources to surpass. but more important is its showcasing of audi's capability, because this engineering will find its way into a6 and a4 models in around four years. rIchard WEbb

from road To SEa When a luxury car brand authorises the development of a sport yacht, it’s going to be a one-of-a-kind creation. Earlier this year, marquis yachts partnered with Lexus to engineer and build a prototype, concept boat that applies the Lexus design language to a maritime design. It’s a sleek, speedy, carbon-fibre vessel, with a twin V-8 gasoline engine that produces a total of 950hp and enables a top speed of 79km/h. It’s also touchscreen-everything, like you’d find on a custom superyacht.

rIdE fUrThEr for longEr The Specialized Turbo Levo was created to be a pedal-assist bike. This means that effort is required in order to move. And while you can choose the amplification of your effort, this is an experience that even the fittest trail riders will enjoy without a sense of cheating. On a challenging piece of trail in Paradyskloof, Stellenbosch, I cleat in and push down gingerly on the right pedal of the Specialized Turbo Levo 2018 to have the new and improved motor feed intuitively through the remainder of my pedal stroke. The newly positioned remote control allows me to adjust power output without losing concentration on the trail ahead. The test model assigned to me was fitted with an Ohlin’s front shock absorber and it responded beautifully to some twisty roots, jagged rocks and stepped surfaces throughout the ride. VehIcle manuFacturers on both sides of the atlantic have experienced great tribulations over the past few decades but, generally speaking, petrolheads reserve their sympathy for those marques that have a British heritage. While some uK brands have been led to the wall and their corpses carried away with barely a hint of regret from motorists, others have had an almost miraculous stay of execution that has resulted in their complete return to grace. rolls-royce, Bentley, aston martin and mini are brands that immediately come to mind, followed by Jaguar. Jaguar’s lowest point coincided with the company’s acquisition by american carmaker Ford (which also bought land rover) in 2000. cars built in this period were clunky and unpopular, and Jaguar never made a profit until it was resold in 2008 to India’s tata motors. It meant a remarkable revival for the iconic marque. the ‘leaping cat’, as Jaguar is popularly known, has become an incredbily strong brand in 2017 with a product range of high-performance luxury vehicles that include some of the most beautiful and desirable on the road. While the X-series of sporting, business and luxury saloons were the cars upon which the revival was based, renewed impetus has been provided by the F-series comprising the spectacular F-type sports car and the equally impressive F-Pace sports utility vehicle (suV). the F-Pace comes in two and three-litre models and it was with great glee that I received the smaller r-sport to test-drive – I took it for a week-long roadtrip up the Garden route. the plan was to test not only its all-wheel-drive capabilities in Knysna’s mystical forests but also evaluate its general driveability – which includes comfort – on the open road. My first impression was of size. The F-Pace is a bit of a beast (4.731 metres long and 2.175 metres wide) and, frankly, I wouldn’t want one if I was only driving it in the city. Despite parking-assist cameras front and back, it’s something of a nightmare to parallel park and has the turning circle of an aircraft carrier. But get it out on the road and ooooooh, mamma! Perhaps I shouldn’t say this but I’ll do so anyway; nothing, but nothing, overtook me on the N2 – bordered both sides by canola fields blossoming brilliantly yellow – between Cape Town and George. With a tank size of 60 litres and a manufacturerclaimed consumption of 5.3 litres/100km, I could almost make the whole 980km roundtrip between cape town and Knysna (as well as the subsequent hinterland expeditions) on a single serving of diesel. I usually base myself in Wilderness or Sedgefield, two towns that maintain the charm of the Garden route and have none of the urban chaos of George or Knysna. most important, the towns provide easy access to the back roads with which to explore the Wilderness lakes wetlands area as well as the famed seven Passes route. this 75km tar and gravel road was constructed by thomas Bain and his brotherin-law Adam de Smidt in 1867, crossing 10 rivers and seven gorges. The route is in its totality a national monument. If you start in George, your final pass is the Phantom Forest on the outskirts of Knysna. start fairly early and you’ll be at the Bell tavern at Belvidere manor – on the road to Brenton-on-sea – in time for lunch. If you start mid-morning, take the Rheenendal turn-off on the N2 between Knysna and Sedgefield and enjoy coffee and cake at totties Farm Kitchen. This is pretty much what a friend and I did on our first day and the F-Pace handled the various surfaces with aplomb. It rained for much of the day but, as much as I tried to get the tail to drift on some of the muddier bends, the intelligent driveline dynamics in conjunction with the dynamic stability control had it back on line almost instantly. Jaguar, of course, is all about style and elegance, and the F-Pace does not disappoint. heads turn wherever one goes and it’s such a plush and comfortable ride that you can actually beam indulgently as you flash past.

Why go for good or better when the best is possible? Lexus just moved the goal posts with a car that leaves an indelible impression on all your senses. Words RIchaRd WEbb

One Of my favOurite authOrs, C.s. Lewis said of superlatives, ‘Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say infinitely when you mean very; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something truly infinite.’ The time for the infinite may not yet be upon us, but Lexus has just delivered the strongest evidence yet of their new level of design and engineering ingenuity: the 2018 LC 500. But first, some context before dusting off any superlatives. Concept cars are often jaw-dropping in design; after all, they are meant to embody the formidable creative and

engineering potential of carmakers. But the transition from motor-show icon to the dealership forecourt often causes them to become watered down, which can be disheartening. this makes the new LC 500 all the more captivating because it’s just about indistinguishable from the brave Lf-LC concept car that was revealed in 2012. the design language is dramatic, and points to Lexus’ determined efforts to shake off any traces of the previously staid or predictable. the car seems to define what the brand intends to be, and it’s clear it’s headed in the right direction.

remember the last Lexus supercar, the Lf? it was an astonishing beast of a car but it was hard to imagine how its carbon-fibre tub or 9 000 rpm wailing v-10 engine was going to trickle down to mainstream Lexus models. Well, now we know. With the LC 500, the trickle has become a torrent. some will call it a 2+2 sports car, but it’s more of a grand touring coupé with a predilection for serious highperformance. make no mistake, this is Lexus’ new pole-position sitter and will surely influence the future line-up in ways that will win many conquest sales on its design alone.

Lexus’ radical design language is instantly recognisable and unique, and more likely than ever to stir emotions than the many familiar and similar ‘me too’ brands available today. But it’s in the white-hot battle with an elite class of international grand touring coupés that the car is pitched. it has to be taken seriously by those who buy cars for the driving experience, and not just for its kerbside appeal – there would need to be real substance in the overall package. a good place to start is the chassis that underpins it all. it’s all new and doesn’t share components or design ideology with any of the current Lexus stable, but will serve as the blueprint for the brand’s future front-engine, rear-drive cars. Chief engineer Koji sato said that the goal was to ‘make the dynamic feedback clear, and our team spent

more than triple the usual amount of time perfecting the LC 500’s road feel’. Locally, the LC 500 is launching with its tested 5.0-litre naturally aspirated v-8, punching out 351kW, and mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission for a linear throttle response. and oh, the sound! this thing howls – a vocal bellow unfettered by any turbocharger’s plumbing. inside, the cabin has an air of highlevel, opulent material richness and styling flourishes that distinguish the LC 500 from its antagonists every bit as convincingly as the exterior does. the result is an amazing experience where traditional takumi craftsmanship fuses with modern technologies. they’re seemingly contradictory but these paradoxes make it truly cutting edge – it’s aesthetically precise and feels pleasing

to the touch – and is a genuinely moving experience. Put simply, its makes you want to drive, but i mean really drive. With this elegant and exclusive car, Lexus is convincing people to look afresh at a brand they may previously have overlooked. this isn’t simply a car that looks terrific – it has been engineered through every layer to deliver a very special driving experience. it is ambition made real – evidence of an established maturity, passion and engineering for all to see. the LC 500 is a grand touring coupé that says, ‘We have arrived!’ that’s a remarkable achievement for a brand that’s been around for less than 30 years. i wonder what C.s. ThE biggEsT blow to the image of the cruising holiday didn’t come from Titanic, it comes from modern-day cruise ships. Any sane person would take one look at those great blaring, seething, heaving germ factories, all piled up with screaming children, sporting rows of sunstroked tourists stretched out on deckchairs like half-shaved polar bears or pork bangers under a grill, and vow they’d rather spend time in a Turkish prison on terrorism charges than set even one foot onboard. And they’d be right. who would spend time and money joining 2 000 strangers stacked up in the Caribbean, say, when they could glide as stately as a grand duke and duchess up the Rhine on the S.S. Antoinette. i tried to tell my partner this, but i was having trouble. her parents had once forced her onboard one of those ships that leave Durban, sail to nowhere in particular, bob around on the indian ocean for a bit and blare music through the PA system, while the ship's depressed crew ply the hordes with sugary cocktails and harangue them into having fun, and then bring them back again, seasick and hungover. ‘it won’t be like that,’ i promised her. ‘The first time I hear the Macarena,’ she said, ‘one of us is

going overboard.’ The Antoinette is one of Uniworld’s long, low, cool river cruise boats. other boats cover the Danube or the seine but the Antoinette sails the Rhine from Amsterdam, through the winelands of germany, and follows the border with France to basel across the swiss border. walking onboard is like stepping into an exquisite and horizontal boutique hotel during an afternoon siesta. There is a grand chandelier hung with sapphires; there is soft yellow sunlight and a smiling concierge and an air of ineffable peace. My partner looked around warily. ‘look,’ i said. ‘No hordes.’ in our suite on the upper deck was a bed half as wide as the river and a private balcony where we sipped champagne as we left Amsterdam. The evening breeze felt good on our cheeks. i pointed out a swan, and an old man walking a white dog on the riverbank, and the setting sun on the low golden horizon. ‘All right,’ she said grudgingly. ‘Fine. This is nice. but i’m not doing any excursions with other people.’ she didn’t have to do anything with other people if she didn’t want to. on a cruise ship you have to wait in vast herds to disembark, but the Antoinette holds a maximum of 157 passengers and you come and go as you please. whenever the boat docks, you can stroll down the gangplank and wander into the village nearby or take a bicycle into the countryside. All the excursions are complimentary – just like all the food and drink onboard. in Cologne there was a walking tour of the cathedral and the old town, with a Kölsch beer tasting in a brauhaus afterwards. individual earpieces so that you can hear the tour guide even from a distance. ‘we could take the QuietVox and be in the vicinity,’ i suggested. ‘we wouldn’t have to be part of any group. look, there are only 15 people anyway.’ i could see she was hovering. ‘Think of the beer,’ i said. ‘i don’t drink beer.’ ‘i’ll have yours.’ At Mannheim we went vinegar tasting at the Doktorenhof Vinegar Farm. wearing hooded medieval robes like alchemist monks we walked through dark subterranean cellars lit with candles. The vinegar is made from riesling grapes, and apparently a spoonful is good for the health but, i can tell you, it’s also pretty delicious. There were 160 different flavours of infused vinegars; the place was as fragrant as a perfumery. At a cruise-organised wine tasting at Castle Vollrads in Rudesheim, we met an 80-year-old man, named Tom, and his 75-year-old wife, betty, who had cycled there together from the boat. Tom stood taller than me and his handshake was firmer and he drank a full glass of every wine without even wobbling as he cycled back again. i asked him the secret to his vigour and he said it was three things: regularly swimming in cold water, taking betty dancing whenever he could, and a third thing that he couldn’t mention in front of ladies. he winked and tapped his

nose and i chuckled as though i knew what he was talking about. in strasbourg, while sitting on our balcony, i saw him swimming in the Rhine like a frisky young seal. Each night after dinner we had a cocktail in le grand Trianon lounge and watched Tom waltz Betty tirelessly around the floor; then we would all go up to the leopard bar and i would try to extract his third secret. The cruise was like a long languorous dream, a sparkle of sunshine on water. i stood on deck as we sailed through the Rhine gorge. on my right was a gothic stone castle, right from a child’s fairy story, and vineyards running green up the hillsides. Up ahead was the lorelei, a steep, slate rock where, legend has it, an auburn-haired siren sang a mournful song that lured sailors to destruction at her feet. As we approached basel i sat on deck with my partner one last time, watching other couples sitting hand-in-hand or with their arms around each other, enjoying the last of the Rhineland in the last of the orange light. ‘was it better than you feared?’ i asked her. ‘i’ve already booked to come back next year,’ she replied.

Restoring a Wildlife Heritage An escape to the Karoo bush – such a different bush to the Kruger – promises luxury as well as a glimpse of one of South africa’s most unique ecosystems. WoRDS CAThERInE DAvIS You could hear them before you could see them; the thunderous sound of thousands and thousands of springbok hooves across the plains of camdeboo. It would take two weeks for this springbok migration to pass a given point, and two weeks for the dust to settle in Graaff-Reinet. This springbok migration was last seen in 1896, but ceased due to hunting, road-building, fences, farming and urbanisation. Samara’s history is teeming with stories, and fascinating characters made this land their home. during World War II, a German spy eked out an existence on top of Kondoa Mountain on Samara, reporting back to hQ on the movements of the British across the plains of camdeboo using a concealed

radio. olive Schreiner, author of The Story of an African Farm, lived in nearby cradock. eve Palmer, who wrote the South african classic The Plains of Camdeboo in 1966, grew up on cranemere farm that shares a boundary with Samara. It is the stories of these celebrated individuals, as well as those of the unnamed families who have endured the harsh conditions of the region for centuries, that weave such a rich tapestry of historical experience into this special part of the Karoo. and it was the stories and history – of the people and wildlife – and the endless landscape with huge skies that got under the skin of Samara Private Game reserve founders Mark and Sarah Tompkins.

When they first established the reserve in 1997, their aim was to restore the area to the wildlife haven it had been before species like cheetah, rhino, cape lion, springbok and elephant were eradicated by early farmers and settlers. Samara began taking down the fences, rehabilitating the land (after the overgrazing of goats and cattle of the past 200 years) and bringing the wildlife back to the cape frontier. as the largest private game reserve in the eastern cape, it acts as a crucial catalyst for protecting the delicate and diverse ecosystem of the Great Karoo, as the Tompkins work to create a system of corridors and partnerships that will result in the creation of the third-largest protected area in South

africa. Saving species from extinction is all about preserving the habitat and biodiversity. out on the vast plains of camdeboo, you can spot plenty of springbok, eland, kudu, red hartebeest, gemsbok, reedbuck, duiker, Cape mountain and Burchell’s zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, baboons, vervet monkeys, and white and black rhinos. The reserve is known for aardvark sightings, but they are elusive nocturnal creatures, as well as african wildcats, small spotted cats, serval and caracals. The reserve is also recognised for its successful cheetah rehabilitation programme. currently, one of its cheetahs is fitted with a radio collar which means it can be tracked and

located. and because they are relatively habituated to people, they can be approached within 5 metres on foot, which makes for a magical experience. The bird life is busy too: kori bustards (you’ll find a traditional recipe for potroasted gompou in Palmer’s The Plains of Camdeboo), blue cranes, secretary birds, fiscal flycatchers and black eagles. The experienced Samara game rangers have eyes like hawks. a small herd of elephants has just been introduced to the reserve, marking a conservation milestone as these animals return to their historic range. once the herd – a small family group of six elephants – has settled, they will be joined by a mature bull. It’s a significant moment for so many reasons, not least of which is the fact that the introduction is symbolically recreating ancient elephant migratory routes from the coast. While Samara still doesn’t compete with the intensive game-viewing on offer at the ‘Big Five’ reserves, like the Kruger National Park, it does provide the luxury of seemingly unlimited spaces and a varied landscape (the reserve stretches about 280km2), and there will never be more than 30 guests at a time – something none of the others could hope to provide. Samara offers four of South africa’s seven biomes, from dense thicket to sweeping vistas of high-plateau grassland. It is from these high plateaus and mountains that you’ll experience heart-racing views across the endless, silent plains. Luxury accommodation is at the fivestar Manor House. The design and décor is a clever, modern colonial take – it has a green corrugated metal roof and deep varandas but it’s sophisticated and smart. There are four elegant en-suite rooms and all are delightfully private. The large living room is cosy in winter with a blazing fire, and light and airy in summer when patio doors are thrown open to the 21-metre long infinity pool that overlooks a natural watering hole frequented by warthogs and monkeys. all around the homestead are cool and cosy alcoves, banquettes piled high with cushions for lounging in the afternoon with a copy of The Plains of Camdeboo and a gin.

any gin cocktail (and frozen into ice blocks, looks spectacular); a confetti of coriander flowers over a spice-laden dish is a thing of beauty; wild garlic flowers, subtle cousins of the bulb, are delicious in a vinaigrette; while a cheese-stuffed zucchini flower makes for a delicious spring spoil. Of course, a tea table piled high with beautiful baked delicacies dressed to thrill in fresh and edible flowers will make a lasting impression too. Either way, it’s an easy-on-the-eye trend with its roots firmly in the past, and one that looks set to stay, at least for the summer.

It really Is IndIcatIve of life and times in the 21st century that if you’re trying to determine whether something is a ‘trend’ or not (this is especially true for food and fashion), you simply need to turn to social media. Before, if a food writer had caught a whiff of a movement, they would have to scour plenty of restaurant menus, eat at a myriad restaurants and, quelle horreur, actually conduct an interview or two. now, a quick scan of Instagram hashtags and you’re likely to find your answer. And since a search for #edibleflowers yields over 200 000 hits, it’s safe to say, edible flowers are a thing! Of course, they’re not a wholly new thing. Just ask the romans, Greeks, Persians and Indians, who were entirely used to incorporating edible blooms in their culinary specialities, many of which are still enjoyed day. Orange-flower water and rose water are synonymous with Middle Eastern sweets and bakes, and saffron (the stamens of crocus flowers) has always famously been worth its weight in gold and is regarded as a jewel among spices. Elderflower cordial with its Wordsworthian appeal, is a stalwart of the independent London gin-bar scene, while blue borage flowers have been used to pretty up salads for centuries. A quick trip to my local Woolies yielded edible flowers for salads or decorating cakes – who knew pansies had been leading a double life all this time? Although they had been pickled and eaten for centuries, it was during the Victorian era that edible flowers reared their pretty heads again. Back then, people used flowers as a means of communicating their affections, giving weight to certain blooms. Invariably, beautiful flower-encrusted pastries and dainties were incorporated into the language. Come the 20th century and the onset of various world wars and post-war mass industrialisation and the rather quaint notion of foraging for food and flowers fell out of fashion. It’s thanks to chefs such as skye Gyngell, owner of spring restaurant in London, who have helped bring the notion of adding subtle layers of flavour to food via floral touches back to the fore. This edible flower resurgence signifies a softening of food presentation that makes dining all the more seasonal and relevant. The rule of thumb seems to be that if a dish will benefit from the extra layer of flavour, then more’s the pleasure. Borage, with its cucumberesque flavour, brings a moreish element to

Living Laboratory The valley of tranquillity that gives expression to an award-winning single malt is the focus of an ambitious project to restore native European oysters to the Dornoch Firth in Scotland. Words DEbbiE HatHWay

OncE SO plEnTiFul they were considered poor man’s food, the rise and fall of oysters in the consumption stakes can be traced to Roman times. natural oyster beds, such as those in the Dornoch Firth, on whose banks the Glenmorangie Distillery has stood for 170 years, flourished for 10 000 years before overfishing in the 19th century left 85 percent of them functionally extinct worldwide. That could all change thanks to a partnership initiated by Glenmorangie with the Marine conservation Society, the uK’s top charity driving the protection of its seas, shores and wildlife, and the Heriot-Watt university’s centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology. ‘We agreed to make reef restoration our priority, and with the inception of the Dornoch Environmental Enhancement project (DEEp), we are working towards reintroducing native European oysters to the Firth for the first time in more than a century,’ says Hamish Torrie, director of corporate social responsibility for The Glenmorangie company. it started with an expansion plan for the distillery and the related need to be ‘environmentally in tune’ so that its outflow into the sea wouldn’t affect the marine life or the pristine habitat of the Firth. This necessitated a €6million anaerobic digestion plant to reduce chemical oxygen demand (cOD). it has been operational since May this year. ‘Whisky is made from barley, yeast and water, so the outflow is pretty nutritious. It’s more about the oxygen load on the water which could, if it were over the top, have an effect on marine life,’ explains Torrie. implementing DEEp added an extra dimension to the distillery’s sustainability goals. Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is distilled in the tallest malt whisky stills in Scotland for a purer

spirit, expertly matured in the finest oak casks and perfected by the Men of Tain – generations of distillery workers from a small highland community who will also benefit from the company’s long-term sustainability initiatives. Anaerobic digestion (AD) uses bacteria to break down the organic waste from the distillation process in the absence of oxygen and, in turn, produces three byproducts: water, a copper-rich sludge and biogas. The water and sludge are separated by a complex system so that high-quality, filtered water is returned to the Firth. The biogas is used to create steam that helps power the distillery, reducing Glenmorangie’s reliance on fossil fuels by 15 percent, while the sludge, which contains copper from Glenmorangie’s signature stills, is used by local barley farmers to nourish their copper-deficient land. ‘Our AD plant effectively reduces our COD by 95 percent; the oysters will do the rest. Oysters are brilliant biofiltrators – they clean up water like nothing else,’ says Torrie. Determined to succeed where others have failed, Glenmorangie is being careful not to mess up on its own doorstep. The DEEp is supported by ‘copper-bottomed research’, led by Dr Bill Sanderson, a MASTS (Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland) reader and ‘very

savvy scientist passionate about marine restoration’ from Heriot-Watt. ‘There are three strands of research,’ explains Torrie. ‘One is the flow of larvae across the seabeds which will propagate more oysters; another is mapping the bed of the Firth with sonar equipment to establish the best place to start the restoration (where we site the oysters), and the third is looking at the carbon storage potential of oyster reefs and how that will positively impact the environment too.’ The first phase of the project involved trawling archaeological records, ancient literature and fisheries records, then sampling shell material, to show not only that oysters had existed in the Firth but that restoring 40 hectares of oyster reef in five years was feasible. Phase two involves the careful monitoring over 18 months of 300 oysters drawn from the uK’s wild oyster population in loch Ryan and placed on two sites in the Firth to trial their survival and growth. ‘What we’re doing right now is working out how to do the restoration,’ says Torrie.

‘We need a layer of cultch (shell) on the seabed. The oysters attach to that and grow from there. And we’ll be accelerating the growth of millions of baby oysters naturally – albeit in a modern, dynamic way – by creating spatting ponds near the distillery.’ Water warmed in the distillation process will be used to escalate the juvenile oysters’ growth cycle. These will be used both to augment the population in the Firth and to invigorate small rural oyster businesses. ‘We need public funders to come in and help us. it’s new, it’s complicated, it’s innovative. One thing it could do is transform oyster supply for the agriculture industry in Britain,’ says Torrie. But can you pair oysters with whisky? Absolutely. The salinity in the oysters will encourage you to find new depths of flavour in the brown liquid. Torrie recommends oysters with Glenmorangie Original as Original is soft and buttery on the palate with notes of creamy vanilla, orange and gentle spices.

ROD ChOROmANskI: ‘ThE BEsT BUIlDINg I EVER sAW’

Asking me to nAme the best building i ever saw is a bit like asking a painter what their favourite colour is, or a sculptor what their favourite form is. i don’t have a particular style. i would say that, as a practice, we are more into conceptualism in design, and the process leading up to the final product needs to satisfy the principles of the conceptual narrative. that said, when you’re working on a project like our winning umkhumbane museum, you’re inspired by many things. We travel, attend cultural events, network, read and research, and these factors inspire and inform our work. Authentic indigenous African architecture, such as the carved stone churches of Lalibela in ethiopia (below), is an example from our travels. Visiting places in Africa allows us to absorb a certain way of thinking. there’s so much creative and diverse cultural energy in Africa, in our country, even in our province – we embrace this so that it begins to inform a new approach towards the build environment.

Lecturers on historical and contemporary architecture and travelling through various countries researching specific projects have informed our own approach to work back home. the main precedent for the umkhumbane museum was a project that was built in Spain in 2007 in Vallecas, Madrid. A team of young architects called ecosistema Urbano won the competition to redesign an existing poorly designed public boulevard. their design was informed by a desire to heal the public place by creating an urban ecosystem. their eco boulevard aimed to do two main things: create an environmental project, and create social activity and public space around it.

this was a major inspiration to our project as we shared in the need for regenerative architecture, creating a system to transform an existing dump site and a highly polluted river, the historic umkhumbane River, into a heritage site and public cultural place. This is the first public cultural building for Cato Manor and the first new city museum in about 100 years. ecosistema Urbano began by planting the boulevard with trees to transform the public space. But the trees in the boulevard would take years to grow, so they installed what they called eco-pavilions or ‘air trees’ – three lightweight cylinders featured aspects of green technology so they generated their own energy.

they used various environmental triggers to encourage newly planted trees on the boulevard to grow in and around them. once the trees had matured, the pavilions could be dismantled and used in another project. they designed a system that created public awareness, had an environmental aspect, and brought people together in a curious way around these objects. in their case, they were creating pavilions. For the umkhumbane museum, we had to accommodate artefacts, exhibitions and galleries, so we had to use materials that fulfilled the brief of security and sustainability, which led to permanent structures while supporting a public place and the regeneration of fauna and flora within Durban’s metropolitan open space system.
