Cody the Brave

On 7 June 2017 wildfires ravaged the Knysna and Plettenberg Bay area.

Fourteen horses and ponies had to be evacuated from a farm outside Knysna. In the fear and chaos, five of the ponies could not be caught and were herded into a plantation across the road. However, being unpredictable, the wind turned and the fire spread into the plantation. The ponies were lost! Several search parties were sent to look for them, none were found.

However, Cody, the only gelding in the group, was found on 23 June struggling to see. His face was badly burnt. His owner, having found him after so many days, decided that there was too much determination left in Cody to simply euthanize him. 

As the owner said, "His tail had caught fire in his escape from the blaze and seared areas of skin around his upper inner thighs. His eyelids were destroyed but his nictitating membranes are able to compensate. In one of the many stories of incredible kindness, Cody was sent two customised fly masks from America, complete with rigid eye pieces and UV protection. With treatments lasting up to six hours a day initially and varying depending on his changing needs, he is well on his way to health; complete with a shiny Thelwell-like behind and the cheekiness to match."
