MOUNTAIN BIKING

 

Plettenberg Bay and surrounds has always been regarded a well renowned destination for mountain biking. The most well known of these: The Harkerville Red Route. The older trails have more natural terrain with not too many manmade features, with no packed berms and rollers.

In the past 18 months there has been an immense growth in new single trails in various areas in and around Plett. Some of these areas are the MTO Forest's between Cairnbrogie and Harkerville where Danny Arron and his team has laid out and built a really well flowing network of single trails. Amongst some of the popular trails are: The Dummy Run; Zig Zag; Full Zag; The Puffer; Switchback Grind; Blurry Eyes; Santa Cruz; Bike Shop Rock n Roll and the latest edition Old Coots Corner.

The Sky Villa Trails situated behind Barons View and above Old Nick has good flowing single trails that have been built by Johan Vorster and his team. Popular segments are The Badger; Smoked Salmon; The Bolt; Wonder Lust; Ja-Nee the latest editions are: The Secret; Alchemy and Skyline.

All these new trails and segments, along with the older established trails allow for fun, safe cycling from your home irrespective of where in Plett you stay. These new trails are creating quite the talking point amongst the cycling community with young and old, comparing experiences and times on the various segments with each other.

All trails are well-built and safe to ride for riders of all capabilities. The faster they are ridden the technical difficulty increases  incrementally for each segment. Therefore, don’t just blast the trails blind, rather consider doing a sighting lap of the various single trail segments first.

                                                 LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!

Cairnbrogie remains a popular riding destination with a well-established network of single trails with varying difficulty, a pump track and coffee shop. If you want to save your legs and a bit of time, this makes for a great place to park and ride from; fun for the whole family with various activities for non-riders.

Harkerville Sanparks trails has various routes like Red Route; Yellow Route and Green Route. Another age old popular outride is Alkantmooi that offers approximately a 40km round route from town and back, with trails like Whiskey Creek Jol; James’s Loop; The Vision; Owen’s Loop; James’s Run and Rob’s Bastard Hill.

ACCESS PASSES: MTO trail pass: can be purchased @ The BikeShop or online. This pass would allow you to ride the newly cut trails between Cairnbrogie and Harkerville, the coastal loop around Cairnbrogie and the established trails out @ Alkantmooi.

A Cairnbrogie Trail Pass: can be purchased @ Cairnbrogie and covers all trails on Cairnbrogie and you can walk or run your dog on a lead on the various trails.

Sky Villa Trail Pass: will be available from December on the MySOS app, which other trail networks also utilise. This will give you access to their trail network above Old Nic & Barons View.
