FORGING AHEAD
Tournaments, Tracks and Hashtags
Last month will surely be remembered as one of the most exciting months in South Africa’s history. We know we are not alone in relishing the fresh energy that has been ushered in by President Cyril Ramaphosa, and we look forward to watching the country’s evolution over coming months. Of course, here at Eye of Africa, we had plenty of our own reasons to celebrate during February. The undisputed highlight of the month was our hosting of the PGA for the third consecutive year. A warm congratulations to Matias Calderon of Chile for taking the title – and, to our homeowners, a hearty thank you for your cooperation and patience while we closed the course for preparations and play. We continue to forge ahead with more
exciting developments, including the growth of our golf team, the completion of our thrilling MTB and off-road running track and the introduction of our social media campaign, #WhyILoveTheEye. Read on to find out what the future holds at Eye of Africa.
LOOKING BACK ON THE PGA TOUR
Tournaments, Tracks and Hashtags
The 2018 PGA Tour was, by all accounts, a massively successful and enjoyable event. We’d like to think that Eye of Africa played a key role in making sure this was the case – not only by offering a superb setting, but also because our greenkeeper, Phil and his team presented a course that was beautifully maintained and with the help of volunteers, an event that ran smoothly and efficiently. Of course, we would not have been able to host the PGA Tour were it not for the patience and forbearance of our members. We would like to thank you, once more, for giving up your course for the two weeks of the Championship. We hope you feel, as we do, that being able to watch all the action from your doorstep more than made up for inconvenience.
We ended the tournament by inviting members of the media to play our course like the pros, giving them a taste of what it felt like to be part of the PGA. We look forward to hosting fantastic golfing events this year. See you on the fairways!
WELCOME ON BOARD
Carl Nebbeling - Head Pro
Eye of Africa welcomes on board Carl Nebbeling, our new Head Professional, who joined at the beginning of the year. Carl fell in love with golf the first time he picked up a club; however, it was only when he was 12 that he started playing, following his father’s exhortation to first “learn the game’s etiquette”. A qualified PGA professional, Carl attended the Golf School of Excellence after matric, finishing top of his class.
Although Carl started out playing amateur tournaments, he gladly signed away his amateur status to fulfil his dream of turning pro before taking a post at Magalies Park. After several months here, he realised he wanted to play again – so, when the opportunity to join the team at Eye of Africa, he accepted without hesitation. “Eye of Africa is my favourite course. I love the layout; it suits my eye and it presents a good challenge. Plus, the setting is amazing. I love feeling as though I am in the bush,” he says. In joining Eye of Africa, Carl is essentially closing a circle: he remembers honing his game when he played here with his father many years ago and now, he will be the person others turn to when they need a coach. He’s
particularly excited about the chance to
share his insights and experience with Eye of Africa’s younger players, as one of his goals is to develop the junior squad. When he’s not on the green, you’ll find Carl fishing, boxing or watching soccer.
ON THE TRAIL
With Neil Evans
South Africa’s mountain bike scene wouldn’t be half as vibrant were it not
for the involvement of Neil Evans, the adrenalin junkie who has left his mark on a number of South Africa’s most famous trails. Born in Zimbabwe, Neil has always been an avid paddler – in fact, he’s a two-time winner of the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Paddling created a taste for adventure sport; Neil has also tried his hand at trail running and, after watching his son taking part in downhill mountain biking, he took up the activity himself. “I was already cycling along the Braamfontein Spruit regularly, and I asked myself: how do you go from riding this flat terrain to making those steep technical jumps,” he says.
A strong believer that the only way to learn is by doing, he built his own jumps on a steep downhill – and that marked the beginning of his love of trail building. Neil started building more and more jumps, so that he could practise and perfect his technique. Trail building has turned into a passion: “I love building something interesting to ride,” he says. Having completed major trail events like the Sani2C and the Trans Rockies in Canada, Neil is now focusing on mountain biking at ski resorts during the summer season.
